Several months ago I mentioned Animal Planet was working on a new show. I got some more info on Dark Days In Monkey City. It looks like it will be airing Tuesday Feb 24 10:00 PM EST / 10:30 PM PST. Here’s a description:

Through a unique combination of live-action and graphic novel-style animation, this new series descends upon the magical isle of Sri Lanka in the deserted city of Polonnaruwa, where large populations of gray langurs and toque macaques live on the streets. Once ruled by Buddhist and Hindu kings, the temple city is now home to a myriad of gangs and troops who fight to survive in this abandoned city where food is scarce and the drama is plentiful. Revealing intense tales of love, treachery, betrayal and triumph, their stories are all part of the Smithsonian Primate Project, the longest-running study of primates in the world.

“UAKARI- Secrets of the English Monkey” is a documentary that will be airing on Animal Planet (US) in 2009, as well as CBC Nature of Things in Canada, as well as BBC Natural World in England. This is the first time Red Uakaris have been filmed in the wild. It follows Dr. Mark Bowler to Lago Preto, home to a troop of 500 rare Red-Faced Uakari monkeys.

Looks like Animal Planet is adding another Monkey show to their line up (they already have “Orangutan Island” and “Escape to Chimp Eden“. This will be the third assuming the others are still in the line up:

Of the fully-distributed Discovery nets, Animal Planet boasts the single most compelling new series––that is, if the title is anything to go by. The newly rebranded Animal Planet will bow Dark Days in Monkey City, a highly stylized series that blends live action and cutting-edge animation to dramatize the ongoing struggle of the endangered Sri Lankan Toque Macaque, which is known locally as the “Temple Monkey.”

Sound good. It seems the folks at Animal Planet know
monkey = good television
.
